Capturing the Winter Sun: How to Frame the Sky Without Letting in the Chill

We live in a region of extremes—bitter, windy winters and humid summers. We were desperate for a glass façade to flood our home with light, but frankly, we were terrified. We worried that going ‘big’ with glass would turn our Great Room into a greenhouse in July and an icebox in January.

01

The Thermodynamics of Comfort

The site is located in a rigorous temperate monsoon climate zone. This isn’t the mild California coast; here, winter temperatures frequently plummet to 14°F, driven by piercing winds, while summers can soar to a humid 95°F.

For the architect, this environment usually dictates a compromise: smaller windows to preserve the building’s thermal envelope. But the site offered a spectacular asset—brilliant, crystal-clear blue skies during the coldest months. The design challenge was contradictory: How do you build a wall of glass that behaves like a solid, insulated wall? How do you invite the winter sun in while keeping the biting frost out?

02

The Solution: The Invisible Thermal Shield

The answer lay in the Liki 130ZKW Series, our flagship Slim-Profile Parallel Opening System.

Detail view of the Liki 130ZKW parallel opening mechanism in a open position, allowing for uniform perimeter ventilation without creating cold drafts in the living space.

Parallel Opening Window

This system was chosen specifically to erase the boundary between the harsh outdoors and the sanctuary inside. The key lies in the engineering hidden within the frame. The 130ZKW utilizes advanced Technoform® thermal breaks —a polyamide barrier that physically separates the exterior aluminum (which gets freezing cold) from the interior aluminum (which stays room temperature).

  • System Model LIKI 130ZKW Parallel Opening Window
  • Profile Material 6063-T66 Virgin Aluminum
  • Finish Color Matte White
  • Glazing Config 1" Nominal IGU (1/4" Low-E + 1/2" Spacer + 1/4" Clear)
  • Certification NFRC Rated Configuration

Combined with Argon-filled, Double Low-E glazing, the window acts as a transparent thermal dam. It allows short-wave solar radiation (light and heat) to enter and warm the polished concrete floors, but prevents that captured heat from escaping back out.

Finally, a “Passive Heating” effect. On a sunny January afternoon, the heating system actually idles. The homeowners can stand inches from the glass and feel zero draft—only the warmth of the sun.

The Customization: Erasing the Wall

Expansive custom-sized fixed picture window in a modern dining room, eliminating visual boundaries between the interior and the winter garden landscape.

LIKI Structural Fixed Glazing System

Standard off-the-shelf windows define a house by its walls. This project required something else entirely: a design that defines the home by its view.

In the dining area, the goal was absolute immersion. The homeowners didn’t want to look at the garden; they wanted to dine in it. Achieving this meant rejecting the limitations of standard American window sizing. A typical local brand would have required multiple vertical mullions to span this width, chopping the view into fragmented strips.

  • Frame Sightlines Minimalist Block Frame
  • Thermal Insulation Technoform® Polyamide Thermal Strut

Liki took a different approach. We utilized our Custom Heavy-Duty Fixed System to fabricate massive, single-lite picture windows tailored to the exact architectural aperture. Because we manufacture to the millimeter rather than forcing a “stock size,” we pushed the glass dimensions to the structural limit.

The result is a “vanishing act.” The frame profile is minimal, and the glass span is uninterrupted. As seen in the dining room, the barrier between indoors and outdoors dissolves so completely that the blue sky and garden textures are reflected on the dining table itself. It is no longer a room looking out; it is a sheltered extension of the outdoors, made possible only through structural precision and bespoke fabrication.

The Aesthetic: A Tale of Two Seasons

Acting as a transparent canvas, the reinforced frame holds the panoramic lake view like a piece of living art.

The true magic of this installation is best understood visually. Outside, the deciduous trees are bare, stripping the landscape down to greys and browns. Yet, just inches away on the inside, a collection of Fiddle Leaf Figs and Monsteras thrives in the abundance of natural light.

This visual contrast—the lush, tropical greenery of the interior set against the stark, dormant winter landscape—is made possible because the glass surface temperature remains consistent. There is no condensation, no “cold zone” near the window, just a seamless extension of the living space.

Functionally, the Parallel Opening mechanism offers a unique advantage over traditional casements. When fresh air is needed, the entire sash pushes outward parallel to the frame. This creates a uniform perimeter of airflow, rapidly exchanging air without creating the targeted, uncomfortable drafts typical of standard windows. Operated by premium German hardware (sourced from Roto or Hoppe), the heavy sashes glide with a reassuring, mechanical precision.

Conclusion

It is 3:00 PM on a Saturday in mid-February. The wind is howling outside, rattling the bare branches of the oak trees. Inside, the Great Room is silent. The homeowner is reading on the sofa, bathed in natural sunlight, surrounded by vibrant green leaves.

The Liki 130ZKW didn’t just fill a hole in the wall; it transformed the harsh climate into a visual asset, proving that with the right system, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for a view.

Project Summary

This project represents a complete architectural transformation of a private residence located in a rigorous temperate monsoon climate. The primary objective was to dissolve the visual boundary between the interior living spaces and the seasonal garden without compromising thermal performance.

By deploying the Liki 130ZKW Series (Flagship Thermal Parallel Opening System) alongside Custom Fixed Panoramic Glazing, the design team successfully replaced traditional masonry walls with floor-to-ceiling glass. The installation features bespoke oversized sash units and uninterrupted fixed glass spans that flood the “Great Room” and dining areas with natural light. Despite the aggressive climate, the residence maintains a consistent indoor climate zone, leveraging the system’s “Passive Heating” capabilities during winter while blocking humidity in summer.
