Practical Minimalism

“I wanted this house to feel open and free, capturing the coastal breeze without worrying about the storms.”

Located in a coastal suburb of Australia, this project faced the classic challenge of balancing an open aesthetic with harsh environmental realities. The site is exposed to high wind loads and intense UV radiation.

The architect required a glazing solution that complied with local safety codes while maintaining clean lines. Our task was to provide a cost-effective yet structurally superior system—delivering commercial-grade weather resistance in a residential setting, while allowing the client to define the tactile quality of the home.

This project is located in a high-wind coastal zone. The environment is aggressive.

  • The Wind: Storms here generate massive pressure. Standard residential windows often rattle or leak.

  • The Sun & Salt: Intense UV rays and salty air can ruin paint and rust hardware in just a few years.

  • The Goal: The client needed a system that is “Commercial Strong” but looks “Residential Sleek.”

  • Our Solution: We did not just sell products. We engineered a defense system. We mixed a high-performance window (50 Series) with a practical sliding door (95 Series). This balanced the budget and performance perfectly.

Structural Defense — awning windows

For the bedrooms and ventilation zones, we implemented our 50 Series Commercial Awning System.

awning type windows

Given the coastal wind exposure, standard residential windows were insufficient. We recommended the 50 Series because of its DP 94 PSF structural rating. This “commercial-grade” strength ensures the sash remains rigid and sealed tight even during heavy storms, preventing the rattling and air leakage common in lesser systems.

50 Series Awning Windows

  • System Model LIKI 50 Series Commercial Awning
  • Profile Material 6063-T6 Virgin Aluminum
  • Structural Rating (DP) DP 94 PSF (AAMA/ASTM Rated)
  • Surface Finish AkzoNobel® Interpon D2015 (UV Resistant)
  • Glazing Config 1" IGU (1/4" Low-E + 1/2" Argon + 1/4")

While the frame provides the muscle, the operation is pure elegg handle from Hoppe. This specific hardware choice allows the heavy sash to open smoothly to a precise angle for ventilation. By selecting high-spec handles, the owner upgraded the daily interaction, making a robust structural window feel refined and easy to control.

Imagine a stormy night. Outside, the trees are bending. The wind is howling. Inside, you lock the window. Click. The noise vanishes. The sash doesn’t shake. The curtains don’t move. You feel completely safe. This is the power of a structural window.

Efficient Flow — Sliding Doors

To connect the living room to the expansive deck, the project utilizes our 95 Series Double-Track Sliding Door.

We didn’t need a complex system here. We needed reliability. The 95 Series is our “Entry-Level” double-track system. It is simple. It is cost-effective. But it is built to last. It uses a proven drainage design to handle heavy rain without leaking.

Four Panel Sliding Doors

The goal here was maximizing space and ease of access. The 95 Series was the ideal “Right-Fit” solution—an entry-level system designed for high reliability without the complexity of a heavy-duty track. Its proven sealing structure offers excellent protection against rain infiltration while keeping the threshold profile practical for daily foot traffic.

95 Series Sliding Door

  • System Model LIKI 95 Series Double-Track Sliding
  • Operation Type Easy-Glide Rolling System
  • Glass Type Fully Tempered Safety Glass (AS2208)
  • Warranty 10-Year Surface Finish Warranty

This is where personalization matters. The client selected upgraded stainless-steel rollers and a modern latching handle, prioritizing a “gliding” feel over the standard configuration. Even though the 95 Series is a standard system, the owner’s choice of superior running gear ensures the door slides with a silent, frictionless motion usually found in much more expensive products. It demonstrates that practical design, when paired with the right client-specified components, delivers exceptional usability.

This door is the gateway to the weekend BBQ. You are carrying a tray of food. You only have one hand free. You give the door a gentle push. It glides open effortlessly. There is no friction. No heavy dragging sound. Just a smooth slide. It blurs the line between the sofa and the sunset.

Supplements and Highlights

A spacious rear deck featuring a multi-panel aluminum folding door system that fully retracts to merge the indoor living space with the Australian coastal outdoors.

Note on Outdoor Living

Complementing these sliders is a folding door system that fully opens the dining area to the deck, further enhancing the seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle desired by the Australian family.

Project Highlights & Suitability

This residence perfectly illustrates Liki’s ability to adapt. We utilized the 50 Series for its sheer strength against the elements and the 95 Series for its functional simplicity, creating a tailored package that fits the budget without compromising performance. This combination of commercial-grade structural integrity and client-focused customization makes our solution ideal for coastal environments—whether in Australia or similar high-wind zones in North America.

Conclusion

The project was a success from manufacturing to installation. By focusing on the specific needs of each opening, we delivered a home that feels secure yet open.

The local general contractor specifically praised the installation efficiency, noting that the pre-drilled accuracy of our 50 and 95 Series significantly reduced on-site labor compared to local fabrication methods.

The Challenge

The project site is situated in one of Australia’s most demanding climate zones. It is not just about the view; it is about survival. The location experiences blistering summer heat that can warp standard vinyl frames, combined with cyclonic wind gusts that rattle lesser aluminum systems. Added to this is the relentless UV radiation, which degrades ordinary paint finishes within years. To endure this, the home required a glazing system engineered for defense.
